It all began with Dagmawei Yissahek Boncato Bekalo, affectionately known as Bubbah, whose warmth and joy left a lasting impression on everyone around him. Alongside him were his cousins, Biniam Tesfaye Bekalo and Nathanael Samuel Bekalo, two equally cherished and promising young souls. Though their time with family was brief, their legacy became the foundation for something far greater—a vision of education that would uplift and empower future generations.
The Bekalo family envisioned a school that would transform loss into a lasting impact on generations to come, ensuring that their names would be associated with hope, learning, and the promise of a brighter future for countless children. The initials BNB represent their legacy, symbolizing a commitment to excellence, love, and the belief that through education, many lives can be touched and empowered. Through this institution, their story continues to inspire, shaping young minds and fostering leaders who will go on to make a lasting difference in the world.
BNB Learning Center was established in 1999 in Hawassa, Ethiopia, as a tribute to Dagmawei "Bubbah" , Biniam, and Nathanael. Inspired by their memory, the school was founded with a vision to create a place of learning, growth, and opportunity, ensuring that their legacy would live on through education.
BNB started as a small kindergarten with 49 students. With strong community support and a commitment to holistic education, it quickly expanded to include elementary and middle school programs, focusing on both academic excellence and character development.
By 2023, BNB had grown into a full K-12 institution with 2,250 students. Recognized as one of the top three schools in Hawassa, BNB achieved an impressive 78% pass rate on the national university entrance exams—far exceeding the national average of 3.2%.
BNB continues to shape future leaders with its 10-year strategic plan (2024-2034), focusing on digital transformation, teacher training, and expanding student enrollment to 3,000 by 2028. With strong leadership and global partnerships, BNB is dedicated to building a better future.
